WordCamp Europe is the largest WordPress conference held in Europe. It has been held annually since it began in Leiden in 2013, and this year it took place in Kraków, Poland, during the first week of June. We, Oihana Arambarri and Nagore Ruiz de Escudero, were there to learn about the latest developments in the community and gather ideas we can apply to our daily work.

The undisputed star of this year’s conference was, without a doubt, the new version 7.0 of WordPress, released just a few weeks ago. The conference provided the ideal setting to present and analyze firsthand the major changes this version brings.

We moved between the different rooms at the ICE Kraków Congress Center, learning new tools and techniques that we can apply in our daily work. This year, we had the opportunity to benefit from the contributions and knowledge of the community, especially on the following topics:

CERN and WordPress: The Birthplace of the Web Has Chosen WordPress

The keynote presentation was given by the leaders of the web infrastructure team at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research). In it, they explained how they decided last year that WordPress would be the content management system (CMS) for all CERN websites.

Why is this great news? Given CERN’s importance and the fact that the Internet itself was born there more than 30 years ago, this endorsement is very gratifying. The process of migrating all of its websites has been a long one, but it is now in its final phase. This clearly demonstrates just how powerful, scalable, and secure WordPress is.

WordPress 7.0 and Artificial Intelligence (AI): Moving forward together

Most of the presentations, in one way or another, focused on the new features of WordPress 7.0 and AI. In fact, this is the main new feature of the latest version:

  • Integrated AI (native client and connectors): From now on, WordPress will feature direct, integrated connections with various AI systems on the market (Gemini, Anthropic, OpenAI...). This means that, in the future, it will be easier to get help writing text or creating images directly from the website itself, without having to rely on external tools.
  • New API functionality (communication between plugins): Behind this technical term lies a practical advantage: website plugins will communicate more effectively with each other and with AI. This will allow for the integration of new features in a much cleaner, safer, and more stable way,

Development and Optimization: Improving Our Daily Work

In addition to the talks, there were also hands-on workshops. In them, we explored techniques for optimizing plugin development and for getting the most out of AI from a programming perspective, among many other things. Attending these sessions is essential for us, as what we learn allows us to create faster, more secure, and ultimately better websites.

In short, we returned from Krakow recharged and brimming with ideas, eager to apply the benefits of all these technologies to our projects. Plus, next year’s conference will be closer to home. WordCamp Europe 2027 will be held in Málaga. We’ll see what new developments the community has in store for us by then.
